Twelve years ago, a movement for self-enlightenment was sparked throughout the globe with the launch of Elizabeth Gilbert’s biographic, Eat, Pray, Love. The book turned movie caused people to search for a new definition of their life’s purpose. Gilbert’s memoire grossed about $80,574,010 in profit since it opened in theatres and sold over 10 million copies in bookstores across the world.
For the very few who do not know about the story here is a brief synopsis. The book chronicles the story of a 30-year-old woman searching for life’s meaning after her messy divorce. She travels to three countries namely; Italy, Bali, and India tasting delicacies, dancing barefoot, and doing yoga. A true spectacle of travel that told people that they will find their true self once they book the flight and quit their 9 to 5.
Since then people have been encouraged to believe that money should be no consideration when it comes to true happiness, whether it’s an expensive yoga retreat, healing seminar or a jaunt to another country.
The screenplay skips over some important facts. The main character was a highly-paid writer which financed her world travel, she had no job to quit or office to leave because tasting delicacies, dancing barefoot, and doing yoga was basically for her job. There is nothing wrong with the message of taking care of yourself but it is the urge and impulse that nudges so many high potential individuals to abandon their jobs with no contingency plan.
The reality is that we need to be more prudent about big decisions no matter how difficult city life is. You only have one life which is exactly why you must be careful.
It is still possible to live out your dreams although looking at your current financial situation this may be too big of a leap. Take a step back and refocus your eyes on a bigger and better goal. This may be farther down the road but it will be a smoother ride.
